Etiwanda is part of Rancho Cucamonga, a premiere
city in the Inland Empire of California, one of the nation's fastest growing metropolitan areas. Located 37
miles east of downtown Los Angeles, Rancho Cucamonga
was incorporated in 1977. The City's boundaries cover an area of 36.5 square miles. The current
population is approximately 121,000 and groth is expected to continue to 170,000 by the year 2010. The
Uniform Crime Report, released annually by the FBI, has identified Rancho Cucamonga
as one of the safest cities in the country with cities of populations over 100,000. Recently, the
California Retail Survey identified the City the as 9th fastest growing retail market in California.
Etiwanda is in San Bernardino County, and
is one of three formerly unincorporated areas: Cucamonga, Etiwanda, and Alta Loma,
that became part of the city of Rancho Cucamonga,
California in 1977. Etiwanda, named after tribal chief, has the distinction of being the first town planned
by George and William Chaffey who purchased the land in 1881 from Joseph Garcia, a retired Portuguese sea
captain. The innovations in city planning, subdividing, promotion, beautification, and most significantly
irrigation for which the Chaffeys would become famous, were first tested in the Etiwanda colony. George
Chaffey, an experienced engineer, created a mutual water company and pipe system of irrigation that became the
standard for water system management in southern California. Not set on just bringing water to the arid
chaparral, Chaffey also harnessed hydro-electric power and on December 4, 1882, the first electric light glowed
from Etiwanda; and four months earlier the first long distance call in southern California was completed between
San Bernardino and Etiwanda. By 1913, the community boasted of paved streets, rock curbs, and street lights
quite a list of accomplishments for a small town.
